The Test

Lex had been feeling out of sorts for a while now. He thought it was stress and running a multinational business is no easy task. Of course, it could always have been brought on by the several near misses in the last week with Superman. Tackling the job of keeping key underground figures from finding out he played both sides of the fence can wreak havoc with body systems all the time. So when Clark found him asleep for the second time that week at his study desk, he put his foot down.

Clark had also given him a body scan and located a tiny dark spot in his lower abdomen. Lex didn't want to admit he was afraid. After all it could be the same cancer that had taken his mother from him at 12 years of age, leaving him to the not so tender mercies of his father Lionel. So, he would deny being afraid and the trembling hand that lay on his stomach as he waited for the blood tests in the below ground labs of LexCorp. When the tests came back negative he was somewhat relieved, but it may be that the cancer cells could not be detected by tests just yet and Clarks' vision may just be more accurate than the very sophisticated, top of the line 50,000-dollar oncology diagnostic machine. But he was a Luthor, he was strong and early detection is key. The doctors would test him again in a few months and treatments can began. He would be fine.

But the lethargy left him unable to complete a workday and employees were beginning to whisper to each other when they didn't he could hear them. He was holding on by a thread when Clark dropped the bombshell.

"Lex, I think I know what's wrong."

"It could be cancer, I know I've accepted that. Early detection is important. I can beat this, don't worry Clark. I'm not going anywhere. I'll be fine."

If he told himself this enough, even he would begin to believe it.

"It's not cancer Lex. You're pregnant."

"Pregnant? That's not even remotely funny. And that's no way to try to 'cheer me up'.

"I'm serious, Lex. You're pregnant."

"I don't believe you."

He went weeks ignoring Clarks' unfunny attempts at humor. And endured the body scans Clark didn't think he knew he took in the early mornings. And he kept the anger at bay when Clark presented his proof. The One Step pregnancy test.

"Just take it, Lex. It will prove once and far all if I'm right or wrong."

"Then you'll stop bugging me about this so-called pregnancy. And monitoring my body?"

Clark blushed.

"Didn't think I noticed did you?" he asked. "Fine I'll take your test," he said through gritted teeth.

He'll just placate Clark this once, then maybe he could concentrate on denying his illness. He went into the spacious master suite bathroom and opened the package. It seemed simple enough, hold the stick so, just a little and then wait 10 minutes for the result that should be a blue line for not pregnant. Which it will be and then Clark will be satisfied and life can return to somewhat normal.

He washed his hands and sat on a stool in front of the mirrored sink. Ten minutes isn't long, he could make notes on the agenda for the R&D meeting scheduled for 10 am tomorrow morning. He would be in the office at 8 am just like everyday to get an early start on the Japanese markets. He absent-mindedly looked over at the test stick; the red line was light and slowly darkening.

In a fury Lex stormed out of the bathroom into the bedroom where Clark was waiting. "Where did you get this?" He asked holding up the empty package. "At the dollar store?" He threw the offensive box hoping to at least hit Clark between the eyes with it. "What have I told you about these 'little jokes' of yours Clark?"

"I bought it at the pharmacy down the street, Lex. What did it say?"

"Apparently, I'm pregnant."

"Well, I told you..."

"Obviously, this is a false positive. I'll be back."

He left the apartment to go to a nearby drug store.

Three hours later and surrounded by the remains of every pregnancy test on the American market and yes even the three sold at the local dollar store. Red pluses, blue lines, wavy lines, check marks, red spots and blue spots. They all said the same thing and left him with no choice.

"I'm pregnant." He groaned.

Clark moved up behind Lex and held him close placing small kisses on his neck, breathing in the soothing, spicy scent that made Lex his mate.

"It will be okay Lex, you'll see."

"Oh, don't think I don't know this is your fault spaceman."

He held Clark tight, no longer in denial and admittedly shaken and scared. But they were strong and could get thought anything-even diaper changing duty. They would be fine. Then Lex had a thought.

"Your mom will be staying with us, right?"

"I called her this morning."

Yes, perfectly fine.
