Part Two, Chapter One.
New Life

P7X 529 (planet destination)

“Well this is new. Danny what exactly are we doin’ on this planet? Whatever it’s called. Can we please make up a new name that everyone will actually be able to remember? Anyone?” Jack turned to Danny looking irriatated “Well?"

Daniel smirked “Point number one we’re here to translate the writings in that temple. Point number two it’s called P7X 529. Point number three as Sam will tell you the names are easy for the computers to understand so they’re likely to make them run more effectively. That right Sam?”

“Yeh, Daniel your right it is. But if it’ll make you happier, sir you call it something else while we’re here, and we’ll even accept it.

“Okay how about we call it Hatonia?”

Sam brushed her hair effectively out of her face as she questioned “Sir?”

“Well, since there’s a statue of Hathor over there.” Jack added as he indicated a small statue peeking out the back of the temple. The statue it’s self was a surprise since the M.A.L.P. hadn’t picked up any indications of the statues. “What would you have called it?”

“Fine, we’ll call it Hatonia, you happy Jack?”

“Ecstatic.”

“Can we go to look at the temple now Jack?”

“Sure, you and Teal’c go look at your picto…thingies. Carter and I will scout out the surrounding area.”

“Jack they’re ‘hieroglyphics’ not pictographs.”

“Yeh, I knew that.” At the array of non-believing faces. “What?”

Daniel couldn’t help it he had to laugh at Jack’s indignant face. “We’ll be inside the temple.”

“Good. Daniel I do hope you realise that it’s a court marshal offence to laugh at your commanding officer.”

“You can’t court marshal me Jack. I’m not military.” The sudden twinkle in Daniel’s oh so-blue eyes showed Daniel’s amusement as well as any laugh would have. Turning his back on Jack so he could get to the temple preferably before Jack could even up the score, with some other retort. While he left Daniel suddenly considered Jack’s and his own relationship. They would bicker continuously, yet strangely Daniel enjoyed Jack’s company. Although they both had absolutely nothing in common there was no one else that Daniel felt he could talk to and trust as much as he did Jack. It was weird he couldn’t even figure out what it was that had caused this trust, he probably never would. It didn’t bother Daniel as long as he had that special friendship he was happy.

Ten minutes later

“Sir, I didn’t find anything dangerous, how about you?”

“Nothing although I think Danny should take a look at that plinth the statue is sat on, see if he can find what that thing is.”

“Sir maybe we should see what Daniel and Teal’c have found?”

“‘Kay Carter you lead the way.”

“O’Neill, did you or MajorCarter find anything of interest?”

“As a matter of a fact that Hathor statue was interesting it had some hieroglyphs on its plinth I was thinking that when your finished here maybe you could translate it too. It probably doesn’t say anything interesting but I’m just curious, I mean you never know.” Jack finished reluctantly as though afraid of their reaction.

“As you wish.”

“So Danny, What does it say?”

“Well Jack, basically the temple is used by infertile couples seeking children. Other than that I can’t tell you anything more.” Daniel added turning for the first time to face his friend just waiting for the sarcastic comment to come and he wasn’t disappointed.

So your telling me these people came to ask, that snake-head Hathor for children now I’ve heard it all. So how were they supposed to communicate with her?” Jack asked only with an idol curiosity.

“Well the wall over here has a sort of instruction manual I haven’t translated it yet.”

“Sir, I think this could be useful, I mean think of all the infertile people on Earth who have to undergo I.V.F and all the other fertility treatments in the hope that they might conceive a child. I could really help them.”

“Okay Daniel translate the wall, but don’t touch anything at all.”

“Jack, I’m not stupid.” Daniel answered with an obvious stress of his name.

Ten minutes later

“Okay Jack, I’ve got most of it, it seems they expect lots of bowing, a couple of prayers to chanted and something… I don’t recognise this symbol, Teal’c I don’t suppose you do?” Daniel asked as his finger finally made contact with the glyph. Suddenly the whole room lit up Daniel froze, he felt as though he’d been struck by an electric shock that just as quickly as it had stared was gone, leaving Daniel to crumple ungainly to the floor and to the blackness of unconsciousness.
